Kanji: characteristics of shape

1 - Observe the shape of the kanji
to determine its group.

The kanji have been classified into four groups according to their shape:

No vertical split, no box >> Group

No vertical split, a box >> Group

A vertical split, no box >> Group

A vertical split, a box >> Group

No box or a box, no split or a split are the only shape characteristics you need to observe before using the dictionary.

The two following shape characteristics are useful to speed up the search in some cases, but are not essential in order to use the dictionary:

  • A dash or no dash at the top of the kanji?
A dash is a flat or nearly flat stroke with no limit at both ends.
This characteristic divides the group of more than 20 kanji into two smaller groups.

A dash >> d

Examples:

No dash >> n

Examples:

  • Number of spines: in very few cases, the number of spines at the top of the kanji is used to create a subgroup. This is the number of strokes or dots sticking out at the top of the kanji.

No spine >> 0

Example:

One spine >> 1

Example:

Two spines >> 2
