Kanji: characteristics of shape

For some kanji, beside the number of strokes there is a d (= a dash) or an n (= no dash). This detail of shape speeds up the search as it divides each group into two equal subgroups (the average is 12 kanji per subgroup).

 

 

 

 

 

3 - Find the kanji in the dictionary:

First open the dictionary at the beginning of the group the kanji you are looking up belongs to, using the signs on the first page of the book and the marks on the edge.

Leaf through the book until the black triangle is in front of the total number of strokes of the kanji. Open the book: the kanji is there! (See examples below)

1) Under the mark of the group: look for the
number of strokes on the left side of the kanji.

 2) Then on the edge of the page: look for the number of strokes on the right side of the kanji. Open the book : the kanji is there!
